Back in Black: An American Narrative

Back In Black

Two cars ago was the last time I had a black vehicle. I did not know if I would ever go back because of how much dirt shows up on a black car. But you know what? Some cars just look good in black, like the one I was looking at, and eventually bought. I was able to take the car home overnight, returning in it the next day to do the paperwork and have it sent to clean up before I took it home for good. The first night I took it home, before it was all clean and shiny, I already loved it and knew that I would buy it. It was beautiful even before it was cleaned up. However, when I picked it up to go home, the black paint glistened with billions of specs of what I would call copper-gold-bronze glitter. It was amazing. The paint color was named Phantom Black, and it was so me. Totally.

A couple of days later, as I was pulling into the driveway, it started to rain. Now, this is normally not a problem for me, as I have a garage. A huge, 2000 square foot monster. But guess what? As I sat there I realized that I had to leave my brand new shiny, glittery, phantom black beauty out in the rain. I had to get out of my car in the rain, and carry everything out of my car into that rain, and at that moment I could understand the stresses that our client’s feel due to their disorganization.

The Garage

I know, I know, it is just rain! But did you read the part where I said I have a 2000 square foot garage? Due to some transitioning and reorganizing of our own, our garage is temporarily (but completely) full. It is very well organized, of course, but full. As it turns out, I am not alone. Actually, according to one article, 70% of homes with a two-car garage can only get one car in. I have no idea just how many two-car garage homes there are in the U.S., but seventy percent is a lot! In addition, there are those folks who not only have a full garage, but a disorganized one as well. It happens quicker than you think. So just what is in all of these garages?garage mess

According to that same article, “researchers at UCLA found that cars had been banished from three-fourths of garages they visited ‘to make way for rejected furniture and cascading bins and boxes of mostly forgotten household goods’.” Now, I know that there are good intentions and plans in there as well. However, how about that bushel of supplies for great crafting ideas? Or a beautiful old wooden furniture piece that you’ll never have time to refinish? Or strings of Christmas lights that you “one day” are going to go through and find the one that doesn’t work? Just recycle them! Or what about all those boxes that have been moved from home to home but have never been opened. You may not even remember what is inside!
